There is far more to Ibiza than its reputation as a party paradise might suggest; from the rich history of its capital, one of the oldest cities in Europe, and its delightful cuisine to the splendour of its natural surroundings and quaint villages, a holiday in Ibiza is an opportunity to sample the very best of the Mediterranean lifestyle.

We at Villanovo enjoy celebrating the other side of our favourite destinations and Ibiza is no exception. It is with that in mind that we explore the secluded coves and hidden natural caves scattered throughout the famous White Isle. So, without any further ado...

Less a secret than a mystery, the former quarry ofSa Pedrera on Cala d'Hort was baptised "Atlantis" in the 1960s by the newly arrived hippie community, who were convinced that the geometric carvings in the rock were irrefutable evidence that this was indeed the tip of the mythical sunken city of Atlantis, rather than the more prosaic explanation that they were formed by the excavation of the stones from which the Dalt Vila of the old town of Ibiza were constructed.

Today visitors can enjoy splendid views of the iconic island of Es Vedrá from the site, as well as discover the carvings, sculptures and paintings left by the hippies during their gatherings. And should you wish to create new myths to adorn the site, then by all means go ahead - you're on holiday after all!

Away from the tourists, just a few steps from Cala Tarida, this small hidden cove is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Ideal for a family outing, Cala Tarida offers a sandy beach for sunbathing in privacy. Surrounded by steep cliffs where nature abounds, this cove is one of the secret wonders of Ibiza. Admire the glistening pristine waters in a dreamlike environment. There's plenty for nature lovers to enjoy, with the surrounding lush vegetation a tonic for the soul. Easily accessible by foot, Cala Tarida is a great spot to visit withchildren.

Taking its name from the column of light that pours into the water from above, the breathtakingly gorgeous sea cave of Na Colums is one of the hidden joys of the White Isle. Notoriously difficult to access, it requires an hour and a half walk across rugged terrain before you're met with the sight of the beautiful turquoise waters, some 6 or so metres from the surface of this hidden treasure. To enter you can choose to either leap in or to enter from below via an underwater gallery. But beware, once inside the only way out is via the tunnel, which requires diving gear. That's why we advise only entering if you're an experienced diver or else going accompanied by a guide.

Once inside however, the natural beauty and unique sense of serenity of this magical location is impossible to deny.

Nestled in the middle of forest upon rocky cliffs 150 metres above sea level, this cave is a little piece of paradise not to be missed during your trip to Ibiza. The route to the Punic sanctuary of Es Cuieram is a spectacle in and of itself.

From Sant Joan de Labritja, you can take the small stony path that leads to this enchanting place. Under thesun of Ibiza, serenaded by the song of the cicadas, you cannot fail to enjoy these sublime natural landscapes. At the end of the steep path is the Cueva de Es Cuieram. The quiet, peaceful environs of this ancient cave, which the Phoenicians believed to be the resting place of the godess Tanit, are adorned with offerings to their hostess, and offer the ideal place to breathe in the mystical calm and stillness of this magical island.

Located in the northwest of Ibiza, in a wild and unspoiled area far from the hustle and bustle of the tourist hotspots, Platja Xarraca is a small, beautiful cove, ideal for a walk with family or friends. It's impossible not to be seduced by the reddish rocks and sparkling emerald green waters of this quiet cove. Platja Xarraca is easily accessible by car via a serpentine road. For those not content to merely soak up the peaceful ambience, this spot is also great for diving. Hang around in this magical place until the evening in order to admire the majestic sunset and fabulous views of the bay.

The rave cave of Sa Figuera Borda takes its name from it occasionally hosting secret underground parties, organised via word of mouth and which have taken on an almost mythical status. Situated at the end of Cala Comte beach on the western coast of Ibiza, this former fisherman's hideout can be reached along a dirt road close to the beach. Once there, visitors can enjoy the views from inside this natural wonder, or even take part in a yoga session. Despite its nickname, Sa Figuera is actually a wonderfully quiet and peaceful spot and another hidden gem of this much misunderstood island.

Found 15 km from Sant Antoni de Portmany, Calanque d'Albarca, also known as Cala d'Aubarca, provides the perfect spot for quiet contemplation. In a peaceful setting, far removed from tourism, the Calanque d'Albarca enchants visitors with its gentle waters and unspoilt rocky shore. Somewhat sheltered from the wind and waves of the White Isle, the views of lush vegetation cascading down the rocky cliffs suggest an almost prelapsarian beauty, perfect for a trip with your loves ones.

Sat 50 metres above sea level on a leafy cliff-edge overlooking the jaw-droppingly beautiful coast of the Cala Salada, the Cova des Vi (literally wine caves) take their name from their function as a former natural cellar for storing wine, so as to keep it from turning to vinegar. Unspectacular in and of itself, perhaps. However, the walls of these caves are adorned with ancient etchings believed to have been drawn either by early Phoenician settlers or else earlier still during the Bronze Age. Most appealing, however, are the stunning views of the bay and surrounding cliffs; the perfect setting to uncork a bottle and toast the beauty of this splendid isle!
