Is it okay to start volleyball at 13? ›

Club Teams

U12 teams are almost always formed with new volleyball players – 11-12 is the typical starting age for club volleyball. At U13-U16, new players usually play on development teams that are focused on fundamentals while still competing in club volleyball.

Don't be discouraged to play just because you're starting late or because you're not tall. Volleyball might be a game where height dominates, but it doesn't make or break a player. It's never too late to start playing Volleyball.

Admittedly, 8th grade is a little late to start playing volleyball, but it does happen and it can still lead to a very successful time in the sport. Your 8th grade daughter can start playing volleyball in the Juniors Program. There is usually a mixture of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in the Juniors Program.

With an emphasis on positive coaching and good sportsmanship, the United States Youth Volleyball League offers children ages 7 – 18 the chance to learn and play volleyball. The eight-week Instructional Volleyball Leagues are coed with four age divisions, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-15.

Height is not the sole determining factor in volleyball success. Although taller players tend to have an advantage when it comes to blocking and spiking, shorter players can still excel in the sport with the right skillset.

3rd Grade Objectives: 3rd grade is our entry-level for volleyball participation. The goal of the program is to help children develop movement skills, and volleyball specific skills, in order to move and play with basic passing fundamentals of the game.

Nets and balls

These are adult size volleyballs which are constructed of lighter materials, and thus easier to contact for younger players. The net height for a youth program may vary, from five to six feet for younger players, to seven feet for 12 and unders.
